April 2005 Sydney Concert

Post by Street_Rat »

Well to begin with, this is probabbly going to be short, i was up at 5 am in the morning and didnt get any sleep till after the concert at 10:30 (almost 20 hours awake plus jetlag, and extreamly tired due to walking around sydney and there was no handouts with what she was playing so everythings from memory and memory was shot )

anway, sorry no photos, i wasnt sure if i was alowed take my camera, so i left it at the hotel room, big mistake, i was alowed take it and use it, a few people even used flashes. owell, live and learn.

i hadent braught Choreography till after the concert where Vanessa-Mae was signing them so i wasnt sure of what she was playing when she was playing it.
I was lucky that i got in rather early, i was only 6 rows back, almost center stage (the stage wasnt that big either) taking a camera would of been exceptional. hopefully one of the other people at the concert took some and are here, if so email them to me or please put them up somewhere.

Now the good stuff::
First off the band came out and a few seconds later Vanessa-Mae came streight out and started with Sabre Dance (i recognised this one).
She then continued to play two others on her acoustic violin then spoke to the audince and moved to an electric violin, this one was full grey, not one ive seen in any performances before, and there was some technical difficulties with it not transmitting properly so that was quickly fixed and she continued to play Laughing Budda and Pasha.
After thoes two, she went back to the acoustic and played a few more from Choreography and then from memory Im a Doun (the non singing version) and Retro.
She then went back to a few more from Choreography and played Bach Street Prelude. (ill get back to this one)
She finished off the rest from the new CD and went off stage, the lights didnt come back on and the audience went in uproar, applause like ive never heard before.
This braught Vanessa-Mae back out and streight into Sabre Dance again, and after that Storm.
great way to finish off in my opinion.
I noticed that after every two or three songs she would always wipe down the acoustic and retune it.

now back to Bach Street Prelude, this one stood out a bit.
The drummer to begin with used two whirly things and made a whirly sound with them before Vanessa-Mae started playing, then Vanessa-Mae started and the drummer moved on to thoes rubber toy hammers you give to kids, he was beeting them on everything around for a min or two, then moved on to some bigger toy hammers and started hitting them everywhere as well, including his head, it was rather amusing and extreamly unexpected, but then again Vanessa-Mae did say she loved trying out new things with that song, after that he went on to drum sticks and a lot of other insturments that made noise, it was brillient, and during most of this, Vanessa-Mae sat at the front of the stage with her legs over the edge right infront of some lucky guy, litrelly 40 cm away, if the guy put his arm out, he could of quite easily grabbed her knee.

about 30 min after the concert, she came out and started signing cds (she at this point had changed tops)
For the whole concert she was wearing the blue top and black jeans like the ones she was wearing at the Bangkok Concert.
When she came out, she was wearing the same black jeans and a new top.

it looked a lot like the top in that image (if not that same top)

I was thinking very hard about staying in Sydney another night for her second performance and taking a camera this time, both to get some photos and because it was awsome concert, but unfortunatelly, ive got work tomorrow. I guess wanting to go back is a common feeling after seeing her live for the first time, shes like an expensive addictive drug, once is never enough.

over all the concert was probably the best 2 hours of my life, for my first ever concert, i think itll be almost impossible to top. absolutely sensational.

I got home an hour ago, jetlag again and about to fall asleep. I believe the review is pritty accurate, but thats comming from someone whos had 16 hours sleep in the past 3 days.
(so much for a small review)

Which orchestra accompanied Vanessa-Mae? Your local orchestra or her own?

Thanks street_rat for your story.

I am really glad that you liked her show, and to be honest I didn't expect otherwise. wow, what an experience: your firts concert of Vanessa-Mae and having your 'Choreography' cd signed by her!

I had an email from Melissa who was at her first show in Sydney. She was delighted too about Vanessa-Mae's performance and play. Melissa said: 'All that I can say is that she played beautifully, passionately, and perfectly!!!!'

Here is a link to the article as pdf:

Vanessa-Mae live in Sydney

Newspapers in general make articles available online for only a short period of time and after that period you need to register. I always make pdf's of all articles that I find.

Yet another Jerk!!
It seems to me that this idiot has never been to a concert before
never mind a Vanessa_Mae Concert?
It seems that he was expecting a Classical concert maybe something
light by Handel?
This Guy needs to liven up, put away his smoking jacket and Sherry glass
and get out there and a live a little. What a Jerk!!!

I really love the last bit

>Quote<
Mae says she is bringing together classical and popular music - nothing wrong in
that. But in reality she is simply homogenising both with the dead hand of
commercialism. With such enormous talent, she should spend more time with
creative musicians of both styles and less with marketing executives.

This just proves that he is talking out of his rear, he hasn't got the slightest
idea who Vanessa-Mae is and what she's about, If he was to visit her
official website he will soon discover that our girl is definitely not commercial?

What a idiot!

Well .. i would take that press review with a grain of salt ... lets dissect it the review ... i know many of you including Arioch would rather dissect the reviewer but bare with me for a moment.

1) The fact that he seems to know what a Guadagnini is hint that he has some clue on the violin feild. He is probably well versed in classical violin music. His reference to the various composers also support the theory.

2) He leard about the Guadagnini on her web site. This tell me he did not know her previously and that he did only a shallow research about her. He probably have little knowledge of her background, formation or career history. He is referring to her as a new commer.

The entire tone of the review suggest he is a classical musitian. He was probably totally unprepared for what he heard, probably did not expect it at all. He saw the concert from a narrow classical standpoint and judged it from that point of view.

Personally i would quicky dismiss the review as irrelevent. It is clearly not imparial and does not show any kind of openness nor fairness. Thats the kind of review i would expect to see being made by a classical purist towards any genre of modern music. I m not saying the review is completly wrong, because its probably fair from a classical hardline, it is simply incomplete.

The reveiwer simply didnt do his homework and butched the review.

To be fair i have to say that i would not take Street_Rats review for cash either, since it is clear he is biased. He loves the musical style and the artist. I would be just as biased as he is :D

Atre.

P.S. I did finish my income taxes ... hurray!!!!!

eva03: im not too sure, but there were only about 10 others in the background and they didnt do much

Arioch: if its anything like the last wait, itll be about 8 years before she comes back :(
hopefully i dont need to wait that long (ill go looking elsewhere before then)

lol that article is interesting. thanks for putting that up Rijko.
i think you are right Atreides he probabbly is a classical purist and wanted a soft quiet night at the opera listening to the classics, not Vanessa-Maes unique re-touch on the classics.

i wish i took a camera and took my own photos as good as Getty Image did

oh and Atreides, i wasnt biased, honust :D
