At the age of 21 Vanessa-Mae had never had a boyfriend and had never been outside the family home in London other than in the company of her Mother or another member of her family! Her story, then, is one of possessing a special musical talent recognised at an early age and of the discipline of the days and hours of unrolenting practice which led to her being lauded as a true prodigy by world's music critics as well as a deeply sensitive and revealing study of how parental ambition can affect the course of a child's life, both for the bad and for the good. Born in Singapore, learning piano at four and violin at five, she was sent to Beijing at the age of eight for a gruelling period of intense specialist training with a distinguished music professor, trading in her traditional lifestyle at a prestigious Chelsea girls' school for an alien environment in a cramped Communist Chinese apartment, struggling to acquire the Chinese language skills which would allow her to communicate. She returned to London a virtuoso violinist with a 100% work ethic and was accepted into the Royal College of Music, whose Director described her as being 'a true prodigy, alongside Mozart and Mendelssohn'. She eventually became the youngest person ever to record the Tchaikovsky and Beethoven violin concertos. By the age of 13 Vanessa-Mae had achieved career success beyond the reach of most classical musicians in a complete lifetime. This gripping book then tells how her career took a completely different and controversial turn when she was marketed as a pop artist with sexy videos and rock arrangements, a strategy which allenated the starchy classical music critics but which enabled her to sell over six million albums worldwide and to became a hugely successful international television and concert attraction. Most fascinating of all, Vanessa-Mae tells how the relationship with her Mother, which has started as a necessarily protective role, had gradually developed into an oppressive and controlling presence and how on the eve of her 21st birthday she acted with steely determination and gained her total personal and professional independence. This would be a tremendously readable story even if it written by a complete unknown but with a beautiful and intelligent world superstar to promote it success is guaranteed.

Hi amQhr,

I am very sorry that I have to dissapoint you, but this refers to October 2001. Vanessa-Mae had put a hold on this release, because she didn't foud it in a proper state for release at that moment.

www.amazon.com currently staes that the book will be released in September this year, but I have serious doubts whether this will be true. I think Vanessa-Mae would have mentioned it at her latest update of her official webstie end July (see www.vanessa-mae.com).

In her reply to our birthday present last year, she explained the delay and mentioned that the release would probably be at the end of 2002.

dEAR Rijko,

Nevertheless I did this book in my shopping cart and preordered it. Thank you again for "Vanessa in Argentine". This Film should be mentioned for an award. It's a nice Backgroundviolin (not from Vanessa played herself I think!?). Perhaps it is from her very good Quality Professor from China who gave her the stabil fundament of violinplaying. I will upload the Philharmonie Berlin Concert, so you can look something in yelloy, after I've cleaned my Videorecorder, because the Arabian Nights where to dark for Street_Rat.

Perhaps she bEARs that yellow dress in October again

P.S. you know that I'm yEARning for her debut on the MJ&friend concerts!!!

Hi amQhr,

I have the Berlin concert on videotape and dvd already. Vanessa-Mae is so gorgeous in that yellow dress. Also, the black-dark-green dress in the first part of the concert is very nice. Not to mention her short red outfit at the end of the concert.

I am too very much impressed by her face that is beautifully made up in a very natural way: it all looks so magnificantly.

It is a great concert. I still can't forgive myself for not being there.

BTW, I hope top copy the MJ&F in Munich for you this weekend.

One addition tothe Berlin concert. Vanessa-Mae plays it extemely well; it is a virtuoso performance of our girl. Moreover, she played the Scottish Fantasy for violin and oprchestra and this is really one of my favourites.
