Hello Girls and Boys,
I have been reading the new book, "The Violin, A Social History of the World's Most Versatile Instrument", by David Schoenbaum. And while going through the section of the book on selling violins, I was surprised at some of the prices that were being paid for Strad's and del Gesu's around the time that Vanessa-Mae's parents bought her the 1761 Guadagnini. The stated price was 250,000 GBP, which at the present exchange rate would equal over $382,000! That price fits quite well with what was being paid for the Strad's, etc. So that was and enormous amount of money that her parents were willing to pay for such an instrument for a child of 10 years old. They evidently had full confidence in their daughters ability to go to the top!
It also shows the Guadagnini was not just an second hand fiddle, but a masterpiece! As all of us are aware from listening to Vanessa-Mae playing it.
