RE: SOME THOUGHTS ON PRACTICE

Post by CarrollTowerCX »

Hello Boys & Girls,

I was reading the Editor's Note in my August, 2016, issue of Strings Magazine, (Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass). It was on practice and learning the Violin. The Editor, Megan Westberg, wrote in part, "The sheer number of hours a string player must dedicate to solo practice in order to achieve a professional level of competency would seem to signify that the pursuit is a solitary one. And from the outside, it must appear this way. Indeed it takes hours upon hours to master the forbidding, blank fingerboard and the delicate dance of bow upon strings,]......[The technique is hard won, often in solitude, but is only a means to a great end."

This brought me to that part of "The Making Of Me', where Vanessa counted the approximate hours she had practiced the Violin from age five, when she took up the instrument until age sixteen. The total was 7,107.5 hours! The average hours stated for a professional was between 5,000 and 10,000. So that put her right in the middle!
