I've heard the expression before 'The violin is the devil's instrument'
I must say that it seems to be true.

What I have been able to find out that it goes back to the 19th century 'Massachusetts,USA'

Where the Churches used large instruments like cellos and Church basses.
Church basses are so named because they played somber low notes to accompany choir
and congregational singing.
They were never intended to play classical music.

Fiddlers who played sprightly dance tunes blasphemously played the “devils box.”

In Puritan society, devotional music was the only acceptable
form of musical expression

Which must have something to do with this fellow.
Here is a link The Devil's instrument.

A nice fellow was our Paganini.
Don't you think?

Maybe this expression has something to do with the reputation of Paganini, who lived from 1782-1842.

He was called a devil because of his way of performing, his exceptional technique and of course his appearance.

His concerts throughout Europe were well attended and Paganini earned a lot of money for that time.

The violin is a devil's instrument played by angels (Vanessa-mae, etc).
The harp is an angel's instrument played by devils (her critics who never seem to stop harping).

But it could be inspired from the Devil, right? :oth26:
Now I wonder a lot about violin-family instrument's origin. Anybody ever heard about who actually invented these instruments, especially violin?

Whether it's really a Devil's instrument or not, ... I guess this one is really a lovely instrument I ever know. :) Most people even call violin as "the king of music instruments". :)

Anything can be used for good or evil, :spank:
and I believe violin is included. ;)

Who invented the Violin?
A very good question from our vmastorm.

These 2 links are the best that I have been able to come up with so far.

probably because of Paganini's dream where the devil was playing perfect violin music. so perfect it was considered evil.
