Actually, I think she is using the microphone pickup on the violin to say something to the audience. This seems to be unusual, I have not seen this photographed before...... But still, she could be giving Gizmo some encouragement! Ha, Ha!
Everyone use your own imagination. Such as in the first photo,"You behave yourself Boy, and I will give you a kiss!"....and that's what is happening in the second photo.
After seeing your comment about the high shoulder rest, I was looking at some other photos of Vanessa and her Violin and it did not look to be as high as this one. I wonder if this is something recent?

Great question! She has the propensity to experiment, as she does with her strings. I can tell you that I've bought no less than 5 shoulder rests of the past several years, and I've STILL yet to find one that is as comfortable as I want it to be.
