I believe this is one of the 2 dozen or more Chinese and Russian "bootlegs" that are available. Bootlegs are Illegal copies of music (or other media). They may be pristine digital copies on what looks like a standard commercial CD (which they usually are) and not on a CD-R but the booklets suck and are usually single faced, and the CD's printed image is usually not too good. Also with tracks from different sources (like on this CD) the audio level between tracks is often different forcing you to jump for the volume knob between tracks and often the quiet break between tracks in inconsistent.

My recommendation is to skip them. The money the bootleggers earn is likely not going to good causes and the artist & record company are certainly getting Nothing.
Often the bootleggers cost is zero as the CD's are run along with legal CD's using/stealing the legal CD materials. The money you pay goes to cover bribes to people at these manufacturing plants.

My recommendation, buy the legal CD. Then make your own compilation CD from your legal copies. Also, another hint that something is odd,.. add up the time for all the music and you'll see that on some CD's it exceeds 90 minutes. Commercial CD's can hold just over 78 minutes of music (there are some Red-Book 82 minute commercial CD's in rare use) so consider just where/how are they fitting that music on the CD? Maybe the extra tracks are MP3 files,... Maybe the whole CD is MP3 files (usually not). As for the CD being "24-bit", that is likely a lie just to hopefully sell a few more at a higher price. Just because it say it is doesn't mean it is. A 24-bit CD needs a CD players with electronics that can read and deliver read the extra data to get the sonic improvement, otherwise it will play as a normal CD (I'm told, though others say different on this point). Note: 24bit cd's have more data on them so their playing time is shorter too (I'm not sure how much less though). Sorry If I complicate the matter here.

Bottom Line !
Save yourself the disappointment and save your money.
Don't Buy.

Well said Glenn!! I agree with you completely.

As Glenn said alreadyl: don't buy this illegal material, just buy the official cd's and make your own compilations.

Well as I live not far from Russia, I often see bootlegs around me, they usually come from China - (Honkong is the center :)) and Russia. But why you should pay the pirates, when you can download the songs on internet :)......ok ok you should better buy legal cd's (I bought all my Vanessa cd's legal, but I have lots of mp3 of other artists - I think everybody does) Like that joke about whish music compilation is the best in the world - answer hard drive :)

Well Gaven, not to complicate matters, but there are official EMI sanctioned Chinese & Hong Kong Releases.

UPC:7.24355.73290.3 is an official (Chinese/Taiwan) EMI Best of CD with nice Booklet and bonus booklet. 17 Tracks

I looked at that aution just now HERE and though it does look official, as it has the Chinese license seal (Mainland China) and the aol label. It likely also says it's from EMI and has a UPC code too. But it is very likely a pirate for a few reasons.
The cover is a very old poto, the CD Mix seems to be a jumble of tracks and the aol stickered CD are almost always pirated. I could be wrong but I bet it is. Now if you want to get it, it is likely a very good pirate CD with a nice official looking EMI Labeled packing, nice multi page booklet & CD and you'll likely be pleased. But If you do get it look on the back of the disk about 5mm in from the center hole. If you see a bit of the plastic looks smeared or slightly melted that means it's a pirate CD run along with a production run. That tiny melted smear (done by hand by someone) destroys the IFIP code number that allows the disc to be tracked to when & who made it.
Regardless of what the eBay seller says, I can almost guarantee it is a pirate copy, though likely a good one. The eBay seller may even believe it is official. Think though, use your head and consider how can he sell a New Sealed 2 CD set for US$16 and make any money.

Anyone have this Chinese version and can offer details?

UPC: 9.787798.000160 (ISBN 7-7998-0001-1) is an official looking 12 track (aka 13 track) of StC, nice package & Booklet and comes with VM photo card. CD says it's 24 bit too, but it is a pirate CD too.

UPC: 9.21586.94568.6 is an official Chinese EMI Release in HDCD format of StC , 12 (13) Tracks again and nice booklet.

Hong Kong sells StC as a 2 CD set where the 2nd disc is a VCD its UPC is: 0.724353.565909 and it looks just like the rest of the worlds other than it comes in a nice slip sleeve.

There may be other official CD's too. Pirates sell many 2CD sets recently like what you listed above (to out do the pirates on the next street over). Their editions are sometimes so good they look very official,.. but if the ifip code is obscured it is an illegal pirated product.

Sorry to spin everyone heads on this but it is important you all realize what's going on and how to identify such product.
I would hope that the added detail info is of interest & help to everyone.

hmmm, I just posted on this subject in another area of the forum....then I found this article. I have the Chinese issue of the best of album - I got it as a gift from a Chinese friend - and it's great! Quality good in every way, although the booklet is quite shoddy once you open it. I agree with Glen, in so far as I cannot agree with the purchasing of bootleg material, and I do intend to buy the real article when it hits UK stores in March, but for now, this is a great disc. Also 110 percent counterfeit.

Not guilty on the moral side myself though.....like I said, it was a gift. Actually, I was in China back in September/October of 2002 and the counterfeit trade is rife...even in legitimate stores! Discs similar to the Vanessa Mae best of disc (usually 2cd affairs in fancy packaging) sell for about 60p UK equivalent. Thats just under 1 US dollar methinks.... Says a lot about the Chinese economy really.

Anyway, there you go. Hope this helps! :D

Hi Gatis

The first time I ever herd Vanessa Mae was from downloaded material from the internet, which has led me to buying all my Vanessa Mae CD`s legal.

I have played the MP3 files on my computer but the Quality is no where near what i am able to achive on my HIFI :D

I do this a lot If i hear someone discussing a band or a certain song I download the material then if I like it I buy it. Every mp3 that I've kept on my computer I own on cd or vinyl and even on both.

It's great to be able to listen to an album or song before spending your hard earned money.
