I was reading the news scans on El_Guille's web site (nice work BTW) ,it got me wondering about her name/ancestry and how famaiy names are passed on from generation to generation.

First i noticed she did not seem bare natural father family name. But then again we never see in print her adoptive father's name. She is always refered only as Vanessa-Mae.
And her mother is always refered to as Pamela Mae, notice the absence of the '-' ?

All this brought a few questions:
Is Vanessa-Mae her artist name and not her full name?
Does the '-' in her name have any special significance?

On a more general note: How are names passed down in Chinese, Thai , Vietnamese , japanese ... ... ... ... families ? I m sure there must be interesting and subtile differences in each culture.

This is Vanessa-Mae's Full name

Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson

Vanessa-Mae's Chinese name is Image, Chen-Mei

Vanakorn is Vanessa-Mae's natural fathers name,
and Nicholson is her step father's name.
If my memory serves me right!

I believe that (-) in her name is just a link to connect the
the two names Vanessa & Mae together, just to show that
they are her first name.

It has been known for people to call Vanessa-Mae, Miss Mae,
and our girl doesn't take kindly to that.
Certain press reporters have discovered that this is a bad idea.

Rijko will be able to give you more details.

Rijko it's over to you....

Arioch, there is not much for me to add. You have explained correctly.

Vanessa-Mae is our girls full first name. It is a double name and the hyphen is part of it.

Some journalists refer to her as Ms Mae. This indicates that they did not suficiently research their subject and that they have no clue what they are tlaking about!! Even Vanessa-
Mae's mother is sometimes called Pamela Mae, and both mother and daughter are sometimes incorrectly refered to as the Mae's.

The Family name of Vanessa-Mae's Chinese family on her mother side is 'Tan.' See Vanessa-Mae's personal notes and dedication to her Grand Father (Tan Lip Kee) of the album 'China Girl.' Tan Lee Kip died in 1994.

If you read the notes in the booklet of China Girl carefully, you will notice that Vanessa-Mae's Chinese family must have been quite rich with a lot of possessions of land and real estate. During thre cultural revolution in the 60's these propertiers were expropriated by the communists. Members of the family - at least Pamela and her father Tan Lee Kip - flew from china. Tan Lee Kip was very bitter about this and he refused to visit China for a long time, even after the death of Mao. In the 90's after long fights in court, parts of the properties were given back into the property of the family. Vanessa-Mae's Grand Father visited his home land China several times before he died in 1994. According to her notes, Vanessa-Mae is still sad that her Grand Father didn't have the time to the real China to her.

China Girl marks Vanessa-Mae's search for her Chinese roots. I once heard her say in an interview on CNN that she has not finished this search yet. I hope that this all will result one day in the release of another China oriented album 'China Girl prt2.

For obvious reasons Vanessa-Mae decided in 1991 - for the release of her first cd 'Violin' - to use her first name as her artist name.

With most of us, our names are abbreviated by family and close friends.

So I think that it is Natural that Vanessa-Mae's Family and
friends call her Vanessa.
