VM-F Meeting #1 - Re: VANESSAMAE.ORG
Moderator: zeta
I've had to relocate over christmas, hence the major delay for the re-launch of vanessamae.org (I was going to finish it over that period). However I think we're back on track with the new website (yes, there was actually a website here @ vanessamae.org for all the new members).
Now, a few things to be put forward in discussion:
- Anyone here who is a regular VM-F with solid knowledge is scripting such as CGI or PHP be willing to help with that? You see I am primarily focussed on the design aspects of the website and the coding part of it (eg. the forum, the php database which I talked about) is giving me massive headaches :O I would very much appreciate any help.
- Since the new website is a VM-fan community thing, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for "fundraising" to keep the forum and website running? Last year we simply had donations. I'm not sure if we're happy to stick with that. Another way is for me to get some VM-F products run off (eg. shirts, mugs, mousepads etc.) Any suggestions welcome - please send them to haidee@vanessamae.org
- The new website will hopefully sort of run itself (cos I know that I'm really slow with updating news etc. because well, I just don't have as much time as I did when I was 15 and sometimes I'm not up to date myself!). I was hoping to get various fans who have specific qualities eg. they have every single VM article, every single VM photo, first hand news on our favourite violinist etc. I do hope we have enough enthusiastic fans to keep us up to date in areas of news posting, articles archive, gallery archive. Any suggestions also welcome.
Well, that's all I can think of at the moment. Feel free to bring up any other issues regarding vanessamae.org!

Hi aventine,
Welcome back in your own Vanessa-Mae community. I hope that you will find some more time to contribute to the forum.
Just one newbie to go and we have reach the milestone of 100 members. That is a great achievement.
I am looking forward the launch of the new 'Four Seasons of Vanessa-Mae' website; I am very curious to see the result.
I have time nor skills to help with the sripting and so. All I can do to keep searching the internet for news, articles, photos, videos and all other stuff related to our Vanessa-Mae and to submit to the site for uploading.
As for fund raising. I am willing to share in the costs to maintain this forum and the site. You can always count on me in this.

Thanks guys. Basically the format of the site is very "open". I have 4 sections - forum, archives, multimedia, directory and this of course streams into various areas. If we can, we may be able to fit a calender in somewhere there - perhaps of all the VM tours and events we know of (this can include TV appearances, cd releases etc.?)
Rijko, it actually doesn't matter if anyone here doesn't have any scripting knowledge, you're needed just as much! I was hoping to get some dedicated fans to post news and pictures etc. Basically you need to know how to work a computer and fill out a form and click a submit button. (Street_Rat - perhaps you can help me set that up?). I think it's best that way, instead of emailing me the news and then waiting like a day or two before it gets onto the site.
The archives section is pretty much a database of articles for now. I suppose we can also stick in a comprehensive discography AND filmography AND TV appearances? It's going to be a lot of work - we'll need to gather every single article we can find related to VM. That's my goal anyway.
Multimedia is pretty much the photo gallery I had, with legal downloads... hmmmm. Well I was hoping to get some VM wallpapers and screensavers done, and maybe have submissions of fanart.
Directory for now is just a collection of links although we *could* have a directory of fans from each country. Since this is a fan-based thing overall (hey I noticed vanessamae.com has listed this as The fans forum).
Hopefully this is going to turn out right!
:p

Street_rat, that would be swell. I'll get the layout finalized and send it to you so you can play around with it.
Would it be difficult to archive all the articles we currently have and add to them later on? I did do a very basic script (and I mean elementary) last year trying out some possibilities but I just plain suck at scripting ??? Basically, I think our audience would want to be able to search for articles and perhaps list them chronologically or something. I see it commonly on other fansites.

I just sent you an email with my initial layout for the site.
By the way, is anyone here interested in being a "news poster"? I think Rijko you would be right? What about Joe, Glenn, Daisy, Lorjou, Gatis, Kevin etc. Send me an email if you're interested haidee@vanessamae.org
You're not obliged to post news every day. Just when you have it... I'm trying to focus vanessamae.org (I emphasize the .ORG) into the VM fan community direction so even if you own other websites you can still contribute.

Aventine, i have some knowledge on CGI (perl scripts). It's not much, but enough for our site "Vanessa-Mae en Español". We have lots of translated articles, pictures, multimedia, a forum, etc, and it began to be complicated working with frames. I did some research and I started writing scripts: http://www.vanessa-mae.com.ar . Please, take a look.
I've also programed a script for uploading and downloading stuff, like BARS but specially designed for sharing files: GUADS
The entire site took a lot of time, since I a had no idea about CGI, and you know, a small mistake breaks down your site. And it's even more complicated if there are more than one person working on the scripts. I've got no problem in our site, since Jorgemae worked on the contents and I on the scripts.
Unfortunately I can't take charge of your site... it takes too much time, more than i've available. But if you need a specific cgi script, like a personalized counter, an english-translated version of my GUADS script, or anything you need, i'll be glad to contribute!
Regards,
Guillermo.
