Vanessa-Mae's famous jump on Times Sq - Jumping onto a yellow cab!!
Moderator: zeta
Hi all,
I have obtained a video tape with Vanessa-Mae materials. it all dates from 1995-1996, the Violin Player period. The tape also has parts of Vanessa-Mae's famous live performance on New Yorks Times Square. This performance is famous, because our Vanessa-Mae jumped from the stage onto a yellow cab. I will come to this later.
First on this tape is an interview with Vanessa-Mae during the preparations for the Red Hot tour in the UK summer 1995. Also scenes are shown of Vanessa-Mae during the rehearsals. She talks about her musical education, her career so far with the early recordings. She also talked about the VP album and she explains that it is not strickly pop but that it has influneces from many other styles in it, including classical music. She says that her classical training influenced the nature of the sound of the album. She also tells that she used to be very nervous because of a performance, but that now she is having more experience feels only the good vibes of adrenaline that are necessary for performing excellently. She also explains why clothes are important to her. She feels that her clothes should reflect the mood of the music and the occasion, and moreover that it serves to make her feel at ease and comfortable.
The interview was made during a break in the rehearsals and Vanessa-Mae described her outfit as rather casual and informal. She was wearing a light blue Levi's jeans and a casual white sleeveless shirt with large buttons in front. Also her face was made up very natural with soft fine colors on her lips and her eyelids. Her hair was loose and wavy. Our Vanessa-Mae looked very nice.
Now to the item on the tape with parts of Vanessa-Mae's liveTime Square performance. On the tape are parts of Toccata&Fugue and Widescreen, and Red Hot completely. During Red Hot, Vanessa-Mae runs to the edge of the stage and jumps onto something. Later it is recognised that she is now standing on a yellow taxi.
Unfortunately, I don't think that the New Yorkers paid that much attention to this violin performing young girl. Looking at this tape, I didn't got the impression that too many people were gathered around the stage.
Was the jump of Vanessa-Mae onto the taxi planned and organised? Well, I don't think so. If it was, the EMI camera man would have had it filmed better. They would have had a special camera ready in position for this!!
Also on the tape are the well known video clips of T&F, Classical Gas reggea version and Red Hot.

Sounds Excellent Rijko
I just wish that EMI would release some of this stuff.
It's just a shame that all of this archived material is being wasted, it's heartbreaking knowing that it's just lying there collecting dust
Now for the taxi..
I can just about remember the Time Square video.
my first reaction was that Vanessa jumping onto a taxi wasn't planned, But! I think that the taxi was possibly put there on purpose just for show.
Now for the people or shall I say the lack of. This is New York they are use to this stuff happening, you will find that the security was high profile, Keep the people moving and away from the playing area sort of thing. Hence why i think that the taxi was planted.
The second thought now my memory is slightly refreshed is that it was planned, and the camera operator made it look like he was taken by surprise, As you know you see this alot in films. If this is the case then the taxi was planted there.
If it wasn't planned I would wish that it was my car that Vanessa-Mae performed on, so privileged (the Lucky Git!).
The thing is we shall probably never know!

We can't be sure whether this jump onto the cab was planned or not. Seeing the video tape, I just have the impression that it was not.
Of coarse it is good publicity and promotion for an emergent artist like Vanessa-Mae was at that time in the US. From that point of view seen, it would have been a brilliant move to do.
As Arioch said, we will probably never know for sure.
Perhaps Vanessa-Mae will tell us in her forthcoming autobiography.

Sorry If I disappoint here.
The jumping of Vanessa onto the Taxi was planned.
Mel Bush (Vanessa’s manager at the time) offered a cabbie US$50 to park his taxi between the barriers and the stage to let his 86 pound performer stand on his taxi roof. The cabbie refused so Mel offered him $100 and he agreed. Mel tried to line up other yellow taxi’s to give it that “New York City?Elook.
I have been eager to read Vanessa’s autobiography, as I want to hear how Vanessa discusses this. Vanessa's jump on the taxi was publicized after the fact as "spontanious' by Vanessa’s management team. Anyone who was there knows it wasn’t. Think about it, since when would a taxi park within 1 meter of a stage during a performance. Depending on the video's you see you can somewhat get an idea that it all looks a little stages and a little under "fanned".
As for the crowd,.. there really wasn’t much at the immediate stage. This “street performance?Ewas planned but not well announced as few in the media knew or cared much about Vanessa-Mae. So other than the ~20 media people (photographers & reporters), the Angel Records guys (4 ppl + ~6 equip ppl), 4 police and Vanessa’s non-performing entourage (video guy, photographer, Mel, Mom and 3 or 4 others).
If you are familiar with Times Square you know it is a very open area with many streets merging there. The streets were still in use (mostly, one section was blocked) so there wasn’t much people space in the street around the stage. There were quite a few people on the adjoining sidewalks watching from 30 to 40 meters away.
( sorry if you see some Japanese characters in my post, I am having some font problems, my font groups mix)

i always thaught the taxi was no where near the stage, i havent seen many photos or other peices of this matter, so i thaught she got off the stage and climbed onto a passing taxi. (thats the conclusion i came to after reading some newspaper articles and such) .
either way, planned or not, it gave her a lot of good publicity, and her name soon got around

well im not going to discuss the planted, and planned taxi...I just want to discuss Vanessa Mae's clothes during this performance...
did she have a stylist? if she did, that person shoulda been fired, and if she didn't, her manager shoulda been fired for not getting her one, and she should be slapped for wearing those atrocious lil skirt thingies..EWWWW how tacky. I wonder if she regrets those things.
The lil ugly skirt things all shiny and stuff that she always wore during her "Violin Player" days, and those ugly boot things. Not the black combat boots...those are ok. Those ugly white ones. Jesus get the girl a stylist.
Im happy things have changed over the years. Cuz those outfits were just disgusting.

At that time Vanessa's management was looking for attention & headlines. Ooohhhh! the stories I could tell but can't.
Vanessa was very young and went along and or was persuaded to go along. So the dresses, shorts, and boots became her "Planned Style" for a short time.
If you wan't to blame someone,.. blame Mel & Pamela.

Here's a couple of pictures of Vanessa standing on cars.
weird idea
The first link (picture included below) was takes leaning against the stage.
The second (like Joes above) was photographed from the stage.
In the 2nd pic (not displayed here) note the ppl on the sidwalk and the odd location of the taxi. The third link is Vanessa outside Shanghai Tangs standing on her limo. For this "China Girl" street event there were hundreds of people. Picture Links: 1st, 2nd & 3rd

I am not disappointend at all if this taxi jump was planned. I just said that I the video gave me the impression that it wasn't.
A lot of things that are sold as being spontaneous are in fact well organised and 100% planned. This can very well be one of those things.
As for her clothes being styled? I think that Vanessa-Mae changes style with every new album. Look at her hip hangers and open belly shirts these days. These are definitely her STC outfits. Let's see she will have for her next classical album
Does she get advices from a stylist. Of course she get these!! Every famous artist does or has been influenced by ideas and circumstances around him. At the time of the Violin Player, Vanessa-Mae was 15-16 years old and she was influneced by her mother and Mel Bush quite easily I suppose. But I also think her looks and image were styled to suit her and her own views.
As for this particular outfit. It is certainly not my favourite either, but to call it atrocious is a far to strong diapproval in my opinion.
In general on her clothes during the VP period. I have seen so many photos and tv apearances dating in that period on wich Vanessa-Mae was wearing very normal and fine dresses, blouses, T-shirts, jackets and jeans. In general, there was nothing wrong with her image and looks during those days.
On some occasions and video clips, Vanessa-Mae had weird clothes and boots. These are also not the outfits that I like to see her in. But these clothes can't possible be described as being representatve for her style in those days.

So I was correct with my second thought.
Dress sence..
Me, I like this dress it's not her best!
To me it's says come on let's have fun, let's Parteee!
It is for a pop album after all.
It seems to be a cross between the 70's Saturday Night Fever and the mid to late 80's Blondie's Debbie Harry or even early 90's Kylie Minogue.
It' a Fun dress.
The Dr Martin boots once again 70's and 80's, Punk Rock and Skinheads, the I don't give a s*** attitude (the Anarchy look). In other words I'll do it the way I want to.
The only gripe I have is White, White Dr Martins is she mad!!
All in all I give the thumbs up!

As I said before, I have seen many photos of Vanessa-Mae appearing in US talk shows and other events in the USA. Most of the time, she was wearing normal clothes, like a nice dress as an example.
I just can't understand how Vanessa-Mae lesser popularity in the USA can possible be linked to this TQ outfit. I really don't see this connection!

Well I know that Vanessa-Mae did'nt too much promotion in the USA. It does not seem to have her proirity or maybe EMI USA doen't show too much interests either.
Vanessa-Mae did a lot of work in talkshows, promotion events in the Violin Player/CA 1 period. She also did concerts in the USA at that time. She has been there a few times in to promote Storm, but since then no activities were taken.
Anyway Glenn, maybe you can share some of your thoughts on this matter, specifically on Vanessa-Mae but also on the lack of interests in the USA in general.
