Vanessa-Mae was certainly not the first to record famous classical pieces in a modern pop oriented way. In the Nethrlands we had a band Ekseption (in the 70's-80's) and there was also British band of which I have forgotten the name, that recorded classical themes in the 80's including Toccata.

I think Vanessa-Mae was the first individual artist who successfully distinguished herself with this concept of recording classical themes in a modern style. Vanessa-Mae was also the first to name this concept classical acoustic fusion music. The interesting thing is that she departed form this concept and started to record pure pop music and classical music on separate albums again. STC is the first album in this new approach and the year 2003 will bring the first classical album in this line.

Vanessa-Mae has abandoned the concept in which she uses classical themes for her modern pop albums. STC is the first album on which all pieces are modern pop music and that were written by herself and her producer (well exept Whitte Bird of course but this is still contemporary). She did not use classical themes although some of the music clearly shows her classical background. Her next classical album will probably contain only pure classical music.

Uptil now, Vanessa-Mae has always mixed modern with classical music, on her pop anas well as on her classical albums.

The British band that I was referring to in my first post is Sky.
